What the “roach coach” has to do with YOUR brand – how to listen to your customers

The industrial strength “roach coach” is a mini restaurant on wheels. Previously confined to construction sites and garages, now the roach coach prowls office parks offering office personnel a fried breakfast and lunch.

Why does this business continue to evolve and change? Because they listen to their customers. They tenaciously follow the customer and look for changes in behavior. Have you ever seen a construction crew arrive next door for a major remodel, and within minutes the glistening stainless steel truck selling meals to go is parked out front? This is not by chance. These are businesses that talk to their customers and always look for the next opportunity to make sales of chips and greasy eats.

In sales we call this networking, in marketing we call it market research followed by segmenting and targeting our markets. No matter the name of the concept, the important point is that you must do all you can to hard wire client feedback into your organization at all levels.

Why is it so easy for the mobile restaurant business, but so difficult for large companies? Segmentation and targeting strategies require a deep understanding of the customer, something that owners of catering trucks clearly understand. Recently, I led market studies and built the targeting strategies for Oakwood Temporary Housing. You can read about the journey at www.oakwoodroadmap.com. But, you already guessed it – we listened to our customers.
