Four stories to get your audience excited about your manual, guideline or procedures – Part 2

Telling stories and creating metaphors to help drive points home and convince an audience to act after a presentation is over is one way to persuade listeners. This is the second in a series of several stories providing metaphors to help you get your audience invested in a new manual, guideline or procedure.You may have a great presentation or speech planned, but you need someone to take action after the pitch and start using a new process or reference a large volume of information. You are not alone. Often, a presenter can only tell part of the story and excite the listeners, so the encyclopedia sized reference material is saved for later. Here is the second of several stories you may wish to include to help everyone realize how to use the supporting material.

Go around pilot term used to reinforce the need for pages of terminology

Here is another story with a flight theme:

Has anyone here ever flown on United Airlines? You can actually tune the audio on the earphone to the pilot’s channel and listen to the conversation in the cockpit. I was flying into Denver one day listening in and, upon descent, I heard the tower call the words “go around.” The plane immediately made an abrupt transition from descent to ascent, climbed higher and circled the tower.

This was not a time for the pilot to ask the tower for further instructions or argue with a command. It is efficient and effective for both the tower and the pilot to understand and use the same terms.

From now one we will be using the same terms. We will speak the same language. It will not happen overnight. The book of terms is nearly an inch thick, but today we will explore the most critical terms, and over time we will learn the others.

A powerful message — consider the alternatives — and act accordingly.
